I Saw Three Ships

This English carol goes back at least 400 years, and its lyrics have puzzled people for almost as long — Bethlehem isn't anywhere near the ocean, so what are ships doing there? One popular guess is that the “ships” are really a caravan of camels, since their swaying walk across the desert reminded people of boats at sea.
