First, it uses the notes of a pentatonic scale and this is partially responsible for its East Asian charatcter. Furthermore, despite its pentatonic scale on F, the melody actually avoids its key note F and the F chord at the beginning. That's pretty unusual for the pieces we have on this site. If the lack of tonic at first feels disorienting to western ears, wait til the end of the song where it comes to a satisfying conclusion on F.
