Largo, from The New World Symphony

This is one of the most beloved melodies in all of classical music, and it didn't start out as a song at all--it's the famous English horn tune from the slow movement of Dvořák's “New World” Symphony, written in 1893 while he was living in America. Years later, one of his own students, William Arms Fisher, set words to it and published it as the song “Goin' Home” in 1922. Most people who know “Goin' Home” actually assume it's an old spiritual that Dvořák borrowed--it's really the other way around. The melody has since been played at the funerals of two American presidents.
