Nobody actually knows for certain who Elise was. Beethoven wrote this piece around 1810, but it wasn't published until 1867--forty years after his death--when a music scholar named Ludwig Nohl found the manuscript. Some believe the dedication was really meant for Therese Malfatti, a young woman Beethoven proposed to that same year, and that the title got garbled somewhere along the way. Mystery aside, this melody has become one of the most recognizable in the world, and this easy version lets you start playing it long before you're ready to tackle Beethoven's original.
