This one wasn't actually written as a Christmas song at all. James Lord Pierpont composed it in the 1850s as a fun tune about winter sleigh races, first published in 1857 under the title “One Horse Open Sleigh.” It only picked up its familiar name two years later, and only became linked with Christmas decades after that. There's even a friendly dispute between Medford, Massachusetts and Savannah, Georgia over which city can claim to be where it was written. Either way, it's gone on to become the most recorded Christmas song in history.
