Oh My Rosemary Flower

This was one of the most popular songs among Polish soldiers during and after World War I, sung by the Polish Legions as they fought for their country's independence. The words are usually credited to the poet Edward Słoński, who published a version in 1915, with music by Zygmunt Pomarański--though, like a lot of folk and soldier songs, there were many variations passed around at the time and no one is entirely sure who wrote the very first one. Under all that history, though, it's simply a warm, wistful melody about young love, and it plays just as sweetly on the piano as it must have sounded around a soldiers' campfire.
