Amazing Grace

“Amazing Grace” was written by John Newton, an English clergyman who had led a difficult and troubled life before finding religion. He published the words in 1779 as a reflection on forgiveness and redemption. The pentatonic melody that everyone knows today came from American folk music and was paired with Newton’s words in the early 19th century — a perfect match that has endured ever since.
