“Oh My Darling, Clementine” is an American folk song from the Gold Rush era, telling the story of a miner who has lost his daughter. The tune is so catchy, though, that children long ago borrowed it for “Found a Peanut,” a cheerfully silly parody that has become a camp and classroom classic in its own right. It’s a sign of a truly great melody that it works so well for both.
