“The Erie Canal” celebrates the mule-drawn boats that traveled New York’s famous waterway, which when it opened in 1825 was one of the great engineering wonders of the young United States. The “low bridge” warning in the lyrics is completely real — passengers on the canal boats really did have to duck to avoid being swept off. It’s a song full of working-class pride and great storytelling.
