“Šano Dušo” is one of many Balkan tunes with, to the Western ear, unusual meters. The time signature of 7/8, actually quite common in the Balkans, is organized in groups of 3 + 2 + 2 eighth notes. I have found that children are able to play this “irregular” meter surprisingly well, maybe because they have not been hearing Western “regular” meters as long as adults.
Do not shy away from this piece. It has a beautiful melody with an exotic sounding step-and-a-half in its scalewise passages.
