“When the Saints Go Marching In” began as a gospel hymn and found its true home in the music of New Orleans, where jazz brass bands made it one of the most joyful and recognizable songs in the world. It is traditional at New Orleans funerals to play it slowly and solemnly on the way to the cemetery, and then jubilantly on the way back. Louis Armstrong’s recording helped spread it far beyond Louisiana.
