Here’s a song with a wonderfully ironic history. British soldiers invented “Yankee Doodle” to mock American colonists, but the Americans embraced it proudly and turned it into a patriotic anthem. After key victories in the Revolutionary War, American troops played it right back at the retreating British — one of the most satisfying moments of musical defiance in history.
